I have seen the small room at Green Hill school (College class) turn into a room where all the residents gather and work together. Despite the circumstances they face, education is making them closer and thinking about the future. . .The road might be long, but the following spring will consist of the first group of students graduating with their AA at Green Hill School. Some might be the first ones to earn a college degree in their family and this will be remembered at GHS.

The Advocacy and Basic Needs Resource Center on the Evergreen state college is where I served many of my AmeriCorps hours, as well as at the Thurston County food bank to create connections between community members and resources. The Basic Needs Center has become a space for assembling resources, assessing student needs, and accepting people who self identify as low income, houseless or otherwise in need … I met with students who really appreciate the improved capacity to meet needs on campus, including one student who I helped to apply for an emergency financial aid grant and recommended applying for SNAP benefits to acquire supplementary grocery money.
